Anthurium crystallinum is a classic velvet-leaf species native to Panama, Colombia and Costa Rica. Its large, heart-shaped leaves are deep, velvety green with bold, silvery-white veins that shimmer like crystal. New leaves often emerge with a bronze or coppery tint before darkening. Mature plants can produce leaves 30-50 cm long, forming a lush, upright clump. The flowers are insignificant, so it is grown mainly for its foliage.
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Use east-facing light or 50-70% shade cloth. Direct sun scorches the velvety leaves, while low light weakens vein contrast and slows growth.
Watering: Keep the medium lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. Use a chunky, fast-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, coco chips and charcoal so roots stay well aerated.
Environment: It thrives at 20-28°C with 70%+ humidity and gentle airflow. Avoid cold drafts. Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during active growth.
